Tennis Court Regulations

Rules and regulations posted at the tennis courts

(These are taken directly from the official Park District signage. We have re-published them here)

The purpose of the following regulations is to insure the maximum distribution of playing privilege on tennis courts

Your fellow players will appreciate your cooperation

1. Periods set aside for adult play only (16 years of age and over) on all courts are: daily after 5 p.m., Saturdays after 1 p.m., Sundays and holidays until 3 p.m. Children and parents may play together anytime. Children or adults may use courts at all periods when not occupied, subject to the following regulations

2. All persons using tennis courts must wear smooth soled tennis shoes, without heels, so as not to damage the surface of the courts.

3. Reservations for play on all courts shall be made in the following manner:

  • (a) An individual must place his racket on the racket board for the court on which he wishes to play.
  • (b) The left side of the racket board is for odd hour play, and the right side is for even hour play.
  • (c) Players may not racket a court more than two hours in advance of the time they wish to play.
  • (d) Only one court may be racketed at a time.
  • (e) No individual who is playing or has just completed play may re-racket a court until all other persons who have racketed courts and are waiting to play have taken possession of their courts, and all individuals who have been waiting to racket courts have had an opportunity to do so.
  • (f) Rackets which are not claimed when play changes on the hour may be removed from the racket board if court made available by non-appearance may be taken up by the individuals who have racketed for the next hour's play if they wish to ascend it. If not used in this manner the court is available for immediate use by the next persons in line waiting to racket for courts.
  • (g) Only the owners of rackets placed on the racket pegs may use these courts for an hour having doubles or by playing singles. A racket on a peg does not give possession of a court. It entitles you to share that court with the owners of other rackets on the same peg. Note which peg you should occupy for "even hour" or "odd hour" playing time.

4. Play on all courts will begin and end each hour on the hour.

5. When others are waiting, it is requested that doubles be played on all courts when others are waiting, no individual may play two consecutive hours.

6. Local park promoted tennis clubs must make reservations for all local, inter-club, inter-park, and tournament play with park supervisor.

7. Such reservations must be posted ahead of the date reserved.

8. Membership in Chicago Park District tennis clubs is open to all players in the community.
